Hi Benjamin,

In general, it’s always better to find the original source rather than cite a source that cites it. It shows that you’ve been thorough in your research and allows you to understand the quote in context. However, if for whatever reason you can’t locate the original source, it’s acceptable to cite it in the way you suggested here.

Note that in your example, “admits” should be “admit”: the plural form, to match “Grant and Alpert.”

Is it okay if I cite indirectly as: Grant and Alpert (1993, as cited in Frazier, 2018) admits that blaah blaah blaah

Hi Haley,

To use the title of an article in a sentence, place it within quotation marks. So your example would read like this:

The article “How to Cite a Journal Article in APA Style,” written by Jack Caulfield (2020), provides detailed information about references in APA Style.

For the title of a longer work like a book or film, you’d use italics instead. Underlining is never used in this context.

I cannot find anything that discussed how to identify it within the sentence. For example…
The article, How to Cite a Journal Article in APA Style, written by Jack Caulfield (2020) provided detailed information about references in APA style.

should it be italicized, quotation marks, or underlined?

While still being part of a certain issue/volume, they do not have a page number range as they are individually accessible PDFs and therefore always start at page #1. Usually an “Article number” or e-locator is used which is formatted e##### with the number of digits being variable.

This guide from a university website has details:
https://libguides.murdoch.edu.au/APA/ejournal

Essentially instead of the page number range (after the colon and before the period in APA7) you use “Article e#####”

Hi,

It’s always best to locate the original source if possible, to ensure the information is accurate and you fully understand the context.

However, if this isn’t possible, you can indeed cite indirectly: (Grant & Alpert, 1993, as cited in Frazier, 2018).
