Hi Martha,

No, MLA doesn’t recommend additional formatting like that. If you feel it’s important to make this distinction in your text, you can always mention the nature of the publication when you first bring it up, e.g. “The novel The Great Gatsby is …”

Yes, the first and last words of a title are always capitalized, even if they wouldn’t be capitalized in any other position.

Hi Stephen,

Yes, the names of newspapers should be italicized. When you refer to a source title in the text, you should style it the same as it appears in the Works Cited – either in italics or quotation marks, depending on the source type.

a question. should the title of a newspaper be italicised when it appears WITHIN the text of the essay eg …..as The Daily Telegraph reported……should the words The Daily Telegraph all be in italics?
