Hi,

Most topics aren’t intrinsically qualitative or quantitative – they can be approached in either way depending on what you want to find out.

If the topic will be investigated by measuring variables, testing hypotheses, and using statistics, it is quantitative; if it will be investigated through detailed description and in-depth exploration (e.g. of thoughts, feelings or perceptions), it is qualitative.

To give a simplified example, if your topic is “students’ satisfaction with their courses,” a quantitative approach could involve asking students to rate aspects of their courses on a 10-point scale; a qualitative approach could involve doing in-depth interviews to find out how students feel about their courses and why.

I hope that helps!
